For most of us, our first school of law is when our child-like criminal mind sneaks another cookie meets with the swift justice of a swat to the behind and a grounding. From then on, the principles of rule and consequences are pretty solidified in our minds, and we think twice before obeying our natural, self-serving instincts. Some of us, however, recognize that all of society is founded around these same principles, and pursuing a career in law becomes the right pursuit for us.

The idea of going to law school frequently comes with the notion that law school means many years of grueling training, memorization of case after case after case, and thousands of dollars in loans. And while this may partially be true, individuals also know that attending law school also means have a prestigious education and a high-earning career ahead. What many don’t realize, however, is how diverse the field of law is, and the innumerable opportunities that await anyone entering this exciting field.

Most individuals are surprised to discover that there are literally hundreds of careers involving law. There are attorneys, for example, who specialize in real estate law, divorce law, parents' rights law, freedom of speech laws, and religious laws. Or perhaps international law intrigues you – then serving as a consultant to the government, diplomats, and ambassadors might suit you best. The truth behind a law career is that because the law touches nearly every level of our lives, there are opportunities in nearly every level of our life for lawyers to provide their expert input and legal opinions. Attorneys provide the advice to help clients stay out of legal trouble, and they also assume the role of advising and representing clients who do in fact get accused of committing some fault. Aside from these tasks, attorneys also prepare documents, perform research, construct wills, serve as notary publics, and composing contracts.

A certain percentage of those with law degrees with take on other opportunities their degree provides them – some may decide to go on and become judges, those highly-esteemed black-robed arbiters of justice. Others take their degrees back to the classroom and teach others who are working their way through law school. Finally, anyone with a law degree is a highly valued person when it comes to legal consulting – whether working with a small business, large firm, or even legislatures drafting new bills.

Although programs are renowned for their difficulty and costs, lawyers are also highly esteemed members of society who are compensated appropriately for their expertise. As communities continue to develop, as laws are constantly changing, and as mankind constantly tries to sneak that next cookie from the cookie jar, our society will always rely on lawyers to clearly distinguish the lines of the law and help us avoid the swats and groundings we might otherwise deserve.
